According to Certified B Corporation’s website, “Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Society’s most challenging problems cannot be solved by government and nonprofits alone. By harnessing the power of business, B Corps use profits and growth as a means to a greater end: positive impact for their employees, communities, and the environment,”.
United By Blue is an example of a B- Corporation Certified Company. The company was created in 2010 with the idea that an outdoor brand can do some serious conservation, and should do it. According to their site, “Everyone here at United By Blue is rolling up their sleeves and removing plastic bottles, styrofoam, tires, old appliances, you name it from creeks, rivers, beaches, and streams. We organize and host cleanups to make a measurable impact on the most pressing of environmental problems: ocean trash and plastics pollution,”.
Since 2010, 1,584,581 pounds of trash have been removed. Profitable businesses can make conscious, smart decisions to help their communities and the environment. It’s simply a choice they have to make.
